COVER

The front cover of my magazine, in comparison
with XXL appears to represent similar ideals. My cover has a stereotypical
representation of a rap artist as I represented a young, rebellious male. The
pose I set up reinforces the stereotype that rap artists are very rebellious as
he has his tongue out and looks aggressive. I also gave him a gold tooth,
exactly like the image on XXL which is stereotypically associated with rap
music. As my model is male, I represent the male gender in actually quite a
negative light even though this is unintentional. Due to the aggressive facial
expression, I make young men appear angry and confrontational. The fact that my
cover, and the cover of XXL has a close up image, I represent rap fans/young
men as being very confrontational and not afraid to stand up to the rest of
society. Overall, my front cover shows a stereotypical representation of a rap fan, as shown by the comparison between it and XXL. I did this through technical and symbolic codes mostly, but I also used some written codes thanks to the pull quote that I placed on the cover.
CONTENTS

My contents page represents stereotypical ideals, as can be seen by the side by side comparison above with a real hip-hop magazine. My model is wearing a large black sweatshirt, like the model in The Source contents page, a stereotypical style associated with the rap genre. I use the same model here as the cover but I represented him in a different way as he looks much calmer and mature in this image. When couple with my cover, I give the impression that my young, rebellious target audience are actually multi layered and more thoughtful than my cover gave the impression that they were. The 'Contents' is in a graffiti style which, through technical codes, represents teenagers/young adults as vandals which could be interpreted as a negative representation, however, with the technical code of my models calm facial expression, I think that I am actually representing them as thoughtful and not disrespectful in the way that they express their art. With the social media links on my magazine, I represent a young, tech-savvy generation who always like to stay connected with each other through these means. Both models, on my contents and The Source's one, are young men so I represent the male gender and the young-adult generation.
